HURON, SD (Sept. 19) - “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Had Kevin Adams heard that statement during the 2009 Speedway Motors WISSOTA 100 at Dakota State Fair Speedway, he could have “totally” cleaned house on the Modified division during the four-day event.

As it turned out, a minor change in his race setup on Friday night probably cost Adams the win in the Race of Champions; the left rear tire rubbed on the frame, eventually went flat while the #40 was well out in front and Adams had to pull off with five laps to go.

Although he wasn’t a lock to win that night, Adams’ performances throughout the week, capped by Saturday night’s dominating run in the feature en route to his fourth “100” title, proved that while running with air in all four tires, he was the best of the best at DSFS. For his efforts - winning his heat, qualifying feature and the main event - Adams earned a $1,000 bonus from WISSOTA. Friday’s win would have also meant another $1,000 bonus on top of the winner’s check.

After three days of qualifying during the four-day event, which included Modified Last Chance races on Saturday, 30 cars lined up three-wide for the 35-lap Modified finale during the WISSOTA Promoters Association’s first “solo” 100 since 1993, the year Black Hills Speedway hosted the inaugural Western 100.

The event drew a total of 372 cars in six divisions, and thousands of fans from all over the upper Midwest and Canada. Drivers from six states and one from Manitoba, Canada lined up for the Modified main event with Adams on the pole, Joey Jensen of Forest Lake, MN in the middle and Jeff Provinzino of Hibbing, MN on the outside. The second row consisted of Clearwater, Minnesota’s Dale Mathison, Dave Cain of Corcoran and Herman’s Scott Danzeisen.

After the green flag was waved, Corey Seckerson’s stalled #77 in turn three brought out the caution on lap four. The field got backed up during the ensuing restart and, when Curt Lund of Redwood Falls, MN all but stopped in turn three, Rock Degele of Glasgow, MT roared up from behind, clipped the #87 and badly damaged both cars. Chris Prussman of Brookings, SD, also left with damage.

From that point on, there was no stopping or even catching Adams during the remaining 31 laps. He had a four-second lead on second place eight laps into the race and from there, he caught up to the back of the field on lap 19 and
lapped all the way up to 13th place before the end of the race.

Provinzino proved to have a firm grip on second place by the 10th lap, which left third on back up for grabs.

Mathison emerged from turn two at the start of the race in third place ahead of Danzeisen, Jensen, Cain, Jametown’s John Corell and Tony Leiker of Gillette, WY, all of whom were racing in a very tight pack. Danzeisen moved from sixth on lap six to fifth behind the side-by-side battle for fourth between Jensen and Cain. They swapped the spot back and forth until lap 14 when Cain slowed on the backstretch and pulled into the pits.

Danzeisen swiped fourth from Jensen two laps later and by lap 23 was all over Mathison on the frontstretch. Mathison fought off every challenge from Danzeisen, who returned with less than five laps to go, but once again had to settle for fourth place.

Keith Tourville of Star Prairie, WI started 10th and and joined the fight for the final top five spot for a while before falling back.

Jensen locked up fifth in the final running order followed by Leiker, Corell, Tourville, Stearns and 16th starter Mitch Johnson of Hickson, ND rounding out the top 10. Jamestown’s Jason Grimes started 21st and finished 11th.

Earlier in the evening, during the first Modified Last Chance race, Andy Gordon of Murdock, MN lined up on the inside of the second row in the 15-car field poised to earn one of the top two finishing spots and qualify for the main event despite not being around to race on Wednesday night because of work.

After front row starters Ryan Aho of Chisholm, MN and Bryan Nayes of Chippewa Falls, WI led the field to the green flag, Gordon flew down the backstretch, lifted for a split second at the entrance of turn three and throttled down in his quest to grab the early lead or stick close to Aho’s #71A. Neither became reality, because Gordon spun out. Jay Richardson of Spring Valley, WI slid into the #21. Richardson lined up third for the restart while Gordon opted to call it quits and headed for the pits.

Aho grabbed the lead after the restart with Nayes, Blake Jegtvig of Hawley, MN, JJ Schuelke of Dawson, MN and Richardson in the top five. The order remained the same until Schuelke tried to dive inside Nayes in turn three, made contact and spun with seven laps to go. Schuelke restarted at the rear while Nayes’ #QP never got back up to full speed so he pulled into the infield.

Aho raced unchallenged from there for the win and Jegtvig held on for the final qualifying berth in the feature. Shane Sabraski of Rice, MN, however, had to settle for third place after starting 15th. Richardson and Dustin Nelson of Ogilvie, MN completed the top five.

A spin by 11th starter Kyle Koehntop of Morris, MN during the opening go-round in the second Last Chance race, and an incident involving Jess Beckett of Rapid City, SD and Joel Waba of Watertown, SD slowed the race before it got going, but once it did, Scott Tofte of Madison, MN proved untouchable after starting on the pole. Fifth starter Chris Prussman of Brookings, SD pulled away from an early fight for third with Justin Jones of Onamia, MN and finished a close second. Third eventually went to eighth starter David Karst of Mills, WY, a former Late Model national champiion,
followed in the top five by Jones and Waba.

The final Last Chance race came to a crashing halt on the frontstretch and without completing a lap, Curt Gelling of Aberdeen, SD; Rod Cramer of Volga, SD; John Sertich of Sauk Rapids, MN and Chad Peterson of Mina, SD were done
racing. Garden City, SD native Scott Hansen pitted and returned for the restart.

With eight cars left to race, Duane Dale of Aurora, MN vaulted off the inside of row two and was never at risk of losing the lead the rest of the way.

Nate Heinrich of Madison, MN restarted sixth and was second by the end of the first lap. He appeared to have the position locked up until Ryan Engels of Arlington, SD rolled his #13 in turn three with two laps to go. Rock Degele of Glasgow, MT zipped by Heinrich after the restart and despite a late charge by Heinrich, Degele won the transfer spot by a nose.

Hansen rallied for a third place finish ahead of Bob Broking of Grand Rapids, MN and Darian Boyce of Winnipeg, MB.
